"Strictly Come Surfing" - at Westward Ho / North Devon

A warm, sunny day with 3ft waves was perfect for the first competition at Westward Ho! beach, North Devon. From an early start all heats were completed on the Saturday, before storms arrived Sunday.

Chris Hobson won HP and James Hawker I/C, with Philip Watson and Sam Davenport reaching both finals. Jon Mount took both Junior classes. Emma and dad Cedric Wynter completed the winners in Ladies and Masters.

The open/men's classes are very competitive in England this year. With six ranking HP events in 2009, there have been 6 different winners, and five ranking I/C events have brought 5 different winners. One event to go - Kimmeridge on 14th November.

Organiser Gary Adcock and friends - look at the left hand side the beautiful trophy from the Worlds "England Team"!

Everyone met in the bar at Skern Lodge activity and training centre for prizegiving, which included an award for "Best Newcomer" Victoria Lowe. A surf kayak quiz followed for 6 highly competitive teams. There were many interferences. As well as a picture round of beaches worldwide and "what happens next?" in a video round, teams designed and built their surf kayaks for 2010 - judged by manufacturers Malcolm and James from MEGA and Future Kayaks.
