"STRICTLY come SURFING" / NORTH DEVON, UK / SURF REPORT

"STRICTLY come SURFING" / INGLATERRA / SURF REPORT de JOHN WATSON

It's the report from the incredible event "STRICTLY come SURFING". It was last hallowen day (30th October) and, besides the competition, teams designed and built their surf kayaks for 2010 - judged by manufacturers Malcolm and James from MEGA and Future Kayaks. Enjoy the report from John Watson!

"Strictly Come Surfing" - at Westward Ho / North Devon

A warm, sunny day with 3ft waves was perfect for the first competition at Westward Ho! beach, North Devon. From an early start all heats were completed on the Saturday, before storms arrived Sunday.

Chris Hobson won HP and James Hawker I/C, with Philip Watson and Sam Davenport reaching both finals. Jon Mount took both Junior classes. Emma and dad Cedric Wynter completed the winners in Ladies and Masters.

The open/men's classes are very competitive in England this year. With six ranking HP events in 2009, there have been 6 different winners, and five ranking I/C events have brought 5 different winners. One event to go - Kimmeridge on 14th November.

Organiser Gary Adcock and friends - look at the left hand side the beautiful trophy from the Worlds "England Team"!

Everyone met in the bar at Skern Lodge activity and training centre for prizegiving, which included an award for "Best Newcomer" Victoria Lowe. A surf kayak quiz followed for 6 highly competitive teams. There were many interferences. As well as a picture round of beaches worldwide and "what happens next?" in a video round, teams designed and built their surf kayaks for 2010 - judged by manufacturers Malcolm and James from MEGA and Future Kayaks.

Thanks John and congratulations for the event!

PLASTIC SURF KAYAK CHAMPS / AUGUST 22, 23 / SURF REPORT

PLASTIC SURF KAYAK CHAMP / SW INGLATERRA / 22 e 23 AGOSTO / SURF REPORT por JOHN WATSON

Ride! / Photos: Caroline Janganant

It's the 4th edition of this event. It was on the weekend of 22 and 23th of August, Woolacombe Beach. Mega Kayaks was the major support of the event. Check out John Watson report with photos of Caroline Janganant. Enjoy it!

Surf Report by John Watson
Plastic Surf Kayak Champs at Woolacombe beach, North Devon

40 people took part in the Plastic Surf Kayak Champs at Woolacombe beach, North Devon last weekend. With free boats available to use, the event attracted many kayakers to their first surf competition - and they had the chance to surf against each other and England Team paddlers.

After 2 rounds for everyone, then a knockout from quarter-finals onwards, Rich Sims finished with a well-deserved win and a prize of a stay for two in The Thatch Restaurant and Pub, Croyde Bay.

Finalists:

1. Richard Sims
2. Chris Hobson
3. Sam Davenport
4. Philip Watson
Philip and Sam lead the English ranking lists so far this season, with two events still to go.

Most successful newcomer to competition had a surprise too - Sam Jones won a plastic Neutron for two 1st places in the heats and reaching the quarter-finals. At the evening party, everyone went away with something, thanks to the generous sponsorship from Ainsworth, Mega, Nookie and Buff. First prize in the raffle was a composite Neutron RV won by another newcomer, Andy Ryder.

Sunday saw the first Tag-Team Pairs Contest, with 11 pairs entered. Each heat combined 3 pairs, and started with a "Le Mans" style racing start from the beach. One partner surfed whilst the other waited out back. After scoring a wave, the surfer sprints out back to tag his partner, who paddle-twirls above his head to show the judges he's "on". Every surfer is scored separately, and finishes with 1 point for 1st, 2 for 2nd etc, to 6 points for 6th place. The Tag-Team's total score is their points combined. Round Two saw heats with the leading teams drawn against each other, to make the closest competition. Combined points after Round Two gave a clear win for Dylan Petherick and Steve Bowens - good surfing and some devious tactics had won the day!

It made a great fun Sunday morning. Try this format at home and we'll soon have a World Tag-Team Challenge set up!

Late News - Jury's report:

After photographic evidence has been studied from the Tag-Team Pairs at Woolacombe, 23 August 2009, some well-known surf kayakers have been found guilty of ungentlemanly conduct, and banned from Tag-Teams until the next contest!

Report:
ST IVES BAY KAYAKSURF OPEN 2009

The event was supported by: Sunset Surf Cafe (Gwithian), Falmouth Marine School, Desperate Measures and demo boats from Mega Surf Kayaks and Valley kayaks.

St.Ives Bay / Cornwall, SW England

Saturday Morning all the competitors met at Sunset Surf Cafe for a hot cup of tea and briefing for the day.

With Gale force winds and heavy rain the first four heats ran at the Bluff before a pause to allow the tide to come in again over the bank and for the surf to improve. As the tide rushed in the surf got better and better with some fine performances include Ben Thomas getting a lovely cover up on the inside. With all the refraction off the racks at high tide there were some steep drops and bumpy rides.

Sunday saw a warm dry day with moderate cross chore wind but good surf of about 3ft. The semi and finals ran without interruption and all had some good rides.

I would like to make special thanks to John Watson for tabulating the scores when I was in the water and the guys from Desperate measures for helping out with the flags when everyone was starting to get cold and slow.

The final results are as follows:

Masters
1st Andrew Hawker
2nd Richard Berry
3rd Andy Winldman

Junior
1st Jon Mount
2nd Jordan Thomal
3rd Harry Uren
4th Dynal Petherwick

Ladies:
1st Tamsyn Green
2nd EmmaWyntor
3rd Nikki Bristow

International:
1st Chris Hobson
2nd Philip Watson
3rd Andy Hambley
4th Sam Davenport

Open (Higher Performance):

2nd Steve Bowens
3rd Philip Watson
4th Ed Long
