BRUNO MELO / MUNDIAL DE KAYAKSURF 2009

Bruno Melo leaving his heat / foto: kayaksurf.net

Bruno Melo needs no presentations. He's the front man of all the event. He organizes, manages, plans and sculpted the Ocean Spirit event, yet retains the ability to compete in kitesurf, surf, waveski or kayaksurf. In his class (Master HP), he reached the semi-finals and, Gary Adcock passed to the finals for only 0.60 more. Nevertheless, Bruno Melo is in great shape and, once more, congratulations! Below, a slide-show with some of his pics. Enjoy it!

MIGUEL CARVALHO / OUR JUNIOR CHAMP AT THE WORLDS!

4- Miguel Carvalho (Portugal)

We interviewed Miguel in April as one of the national promises in kayaksurf scene. Now, a few months after, he's in the podium - 4th place in Junior HP. Besides Miguel, we also had three more athletes registered in "Individual's" - Hugo Paz, Paulo Simões (Men HP) and Bruno Melo (Masters HP). Hugo and Paulo stayed for the two first heats and Bruno Melo reached the semi-finals of Masters HP. Congratulations for all! Now, a few photos with Miguel and, tomorrow, Bruno Melo on the News!

KAYAKSURF WORLDS 2011 - TWO OFFICIAL PROPOSALS

----

Already missing those incredible days in Santa Cruz, time now to update all the NEWS about the Worlds (and all the other material). In tha last day, Pete Blenkinsop confirmed to us that are, at this moment, two official proposals for the next Worlds - USA East and Australia.

Darren Bason, now living in Australia, defends that the "big island" needs the championship to promote our sport in one of the great surf paradises on earth. Joey Hall and Spencer Cooke presented a more economical proposal but with some peopleo saying that the waves are not too consistent. Summarizing, we'll have to wait till the end of this month so the WSKA committee says if any of these countries or any other, will reveive the next Worlds. Let's wait!

Meanwhile, here are some more pics from the Team Event Finals (July 31).

SANTA CRUZ OCEAN SPIRIT / KAYAKSURF & WAVESKI NATIONAL CIRCUIT

CNKW / SANTA CRUZ OCEAN SPIRIT / RESULTADOS

PLASTIC SURFKAYAK CHAMPS / AUGUST 22, 23 / FULL REPORT

PLASTIC SURFKAYAK CHAMPS / 22 e 23 AGOSTO / SURF REPORT by JOHN WATSON

Photos: Caroline Janganant

John Watson sent us (Thanks John!) the surf report from the Plastic Surfkayak Champ that was held in Woolacombe Beach (England SW) last August. Names well known from the World Team Champion are in it! The photos ate from Caroline Janganant (thanks Carol and Marc). Below, check out all the text sent by John and the slide show with oics from Carol.

Plastic Surf Kayak Champs / Woolacombe Beach / Report by John Watson

40 people took part in the Plastic Surf Kayak Champs at Woolacombe beach, North Devon last weekend. With free boats available to use, the event attracted many kayakers to their first surf competition - and they had the chance to surf against each other and England Team paddlers.

After 2 rounds for everyone, then a knockout from quarter-finals onwards, Rich Sims finished with a well-deserved win and a prize of a stay for two in The Thatch Restaurant and Pub, Croyde Bay.
Most successful newcomer to competition had a surprise too - Sam Jones won a plastic Neutron for two 1st places in the heats and reaching the quarter-finals. At the evening party, everyone went away with something, thanks to the generous sponsorship from Ainsworth, Mega, Nookie and Buff. First prize in the raffle was a composite Neutron RV won by another newcomer, Andy Ryder.
Sunday saw the first Tag-Team Pairs Contest, with 11 pairs entered. Each heat combined 3 pairs, and started with a "Le Mans" style racing start from the beach. One partner surfed whilst the other waited out back. After scoring a wave, the surfer sprints out back to tag his partner, who paddle-twirls above his head to show the judges he's "on". Every surfer is scored separately, and finishes with 1 point for 1st, 2 for 2nd etc, to 6 points for 6th place. The Tag-Team's total score is their points combined.
Round Two saw heats with the leading teams drawn against each other, to make the closest competition.
Combined points after Round Two gave a clear win for Dylan Petherick and Steve Bowens - good surfing and some devious tactics had won the day!
It made a great fun Sunday morning. Try this format at home and we'll soon have a World Tag-Team Challenge set up!

-------

After eigth days of competition between 157 surfkayakers, 12 Teams and 15 countries, the Worlds come to the end. We had today a cloudy morning with some rain (soft) but, in the afternoon, the sun appeared as usual. We run today all the "Individual" Finals as was programed and here are the general results. As you can imagine, we all have thousands of pictures (well... some of us because my camera has disappeared) and loads of video. For now, check the main results of this Worlds and, during the next days, we'll post pictures, videos and all more news about this great event.

This sunday will be the Finals of the Portuguese Kayaksurf and Waveski Circuit during the day (Ocean Spirit Time!!).

Personally, I hope that you all enjoyed the event! A special THANKS to Tim Harvey for all the incredible photos. The same to Cardeli, Pete Copp, and Steve Farthing for the great photos you sent during all this days and that will continue to be published in the next few... weeks!
