Decorreu hoje o primeiro dia de prova da II Etapa do CNKW. Contou com 31 inscritos distribuídos pelas seguintes categorias: Kayaksurf HP 17 atletas; kayaksurf IC 5; Kayaksurf SOT, 12 e Waveski 17. A prova decorreu dentro do previsto , apesar da constante neblina, o mar ajudou e tivemos ondas todo o dia. Ficam os apurados para as FINAIS de amanhã:

Run today the first day of the National Kayaksurf & Waveski Tour. The contest received 31 athletes splited in kayaksurf HP, IC, SOT and Waveski. Great day of waves in Santa Cruz Ocean Spirit with some clouds but great surf. Below the results of this first day:

Décimo report de Steve Farthing! Tivemos ontem a festa de abertura com 7.000 pessoas no Ocean Spirit (!!) onde subiram ao palco os representantes de cada modalidade presente no Ocean deste ano. Fica o report.

One more report from Steve Farthing live and directly from Santa Cruz. Yesterday we had our Opening Ceremony with almost 7000 persons in the Festival (!!). The contest directors of all the sports were in the main stage presenting all the sports. Below the report!

Ocean Spirit on my mind

Last nights opening ceremony was absolutely spectacular. There were fireworks, thousands of people and a band that played on until 2 am. People were queued for hundreds of metres to get in. Many must have missed out because it was packed and standing room only. Jackie, Luis and Bruno must have felt like rock stars with their opening speeches.

There may have been a few sore heads at the start of today’s action with the National Waveski and Surf Kayak competitions commencing. It was great to see Bruno Melo’s 10-year-old twin son’s competing. Give them a few years and they will be mixing it at the top of the sport.

Mamgoz Productions have taken up the initiative of supplying daily video updates on the event and were busy interviewing competitors at the competition site. Their first video should be up live tomorrow night.

Registration is ongoing over the weekend and the draw has been done. I’ve lucked out and scored crazy big wave rider, Ben John in my first heat, who is arriving soon after a detour to Gnarloo.

The world title action starts on Monday, until then Ocean Spirit on my mind.

Circuito Nacional de Kayaksurf & Waveski - Ocean Spirit / Programa



O Circuito Nacional de Kayaksurf & Waveski (CNKW) abriu com chave de ouro na Foz do Arelho no passado mês de Maio. As baterias estão agora apontadas para a II Etapa a decorrer este fim de semana no Festival Santa Cruz Ocean Spirit 2011. Segue todo o programa mais em baixo.

After the first contest last May, the portuguese kayaksurf & waveski circuit will have the second event in Santa Cruz Ocean Spirit Festival. It will be during this weekend (on 6th and 7th August) just before the Waveski Surfing Titles begins. Ocean Spirit rules ;)

A outra grande ausência no Mundial



Depois de falarmos sobre Mathieu Babarit, é incontornável não falarmos sobre Caroline Angibaud. Juntos, gerem a Octopus School e Caroline - já entrevistada por nós várias vezes - foi SÓ oito vezes campeão mundial de waveski. Tal como Matt, não vai poder estar no Mundial. As coisas vão ficar mais fáceis para a "women division"!

After we talk about Mathieu Babarit, it's unavoidable to speak about Caroline Angibaud. She was the first woman that we interviewed in kayaksurf.net (2004) and has an incredible curriculum: she was 8 times world champ, the record in the waveski world!!! The women division will miss her for sure. We're talking about the best performer from ever in this division. Easier life for the those who are competing around and, like Steve Farthing already says in one of his reports, there can be some surprises due her absence!

Santa Cruz Ocean Spirit Festival 2011 / Começa esta sexta feira!!



Tudo a postos para o maior festival de ondas do planeta: este ano, para os nossos lados, temos o Circuito Nacional de Kayaksurf & Waveski no primeiro fim de semana (6 e 7) e, a partir de 8 até 14 de Agosto, o Mundial de Waveski... estamos lá!!

Everything is ready to start the biggest worldwide wavesports festival - Santa Cruz Ocean Spirit! This year, we'll have the National Kayaksurf & Waveski Circui (5,6) and, from 8th till 14th, the World Waveski Surfing Titles besides ALL the other sports. We'll be there!!

É já ESTA sexta-feira que arranca o maior festival de desportos de ondas da Europa - O Santa Cruz Ocean Spirit.

As provas desportivas nas modalidades de surf, paddle board, waveski, Kayaksurf, skimboard e kitesurf vão trazer cerca de 400 atletas, oriundos de 20 países, às águas da praia do Navio em Santa Cruz.

No primeiro fim-de-semana (6 e 7 Agosto) destaque para as provas da Liga Meo Pró Surf, para o Circuito Nacional de Kayaksurf e Waveski e para a etapa do Circuito Nacional de Kitesurf (Wave).

Além do desporto, muita animação nocturna a dar vida à Aldeia Neptuno. No dia 5 de Agosto, dia de arranque do festival, a cerimónia de abertura será às 23h00, seguida do concerto de Expensive Soul. New Max e Demo, juntamente com a Jaguar Band, vão dar música no palco principal do Santa Cruz Ocean Spirit e apresentar o seu mais recente álbum "Utopia".

Well Neptune has certainly delivered today.......great waves, sunshine and one of the best displays of aerial surfing I've ever seen. Rees was leading the charge, just check out his air sequence. The young French riders are going for aerials on every wave and the overall level of surfing has definitely been raised. The photo's say it all.

Opening ceremony on tonight and the party begins.....

World Waveski Surfing Titles 2011 & Mathieu Babarit

Mathieu Babarit / A ausência de vulto no Mundial de Waveski 2011



Se há ausência notada neste Mundial de Waveski... é a de Mathieu Babarit. O multi-campeão mundial da modalidade não poderá estar no Ocean Spirit. É pena. Perdemos a oportunidade de, uma vez mais, vermos os mestre francês em acção. E porque é que todos vamos sentir a sua falta? Porque Matt é muito mais do que um simples atleta. É o grande impulsionador da modalidade, desdobra-se em entrevistas e filmes promocionais - a primeira entrevista que deu ao kayaksurf.net data de 2004! - e assume uma atitude de humildade e paixão pelo desporto que chega a ser desconcertante.

A sua escola Octopus colocou nas ondas dezenas e dezenas dos actuais praticantes de topo do waveski francês. E continua a promover a modalidade como ninguém o faz a nível mundial. Olonne Sur Mer (Vendée) e Plouhinec são as duas mecas europeias (e talvez mundiais) do waveski. É de lá que surgem os nomes da nova geração francesa e a comprovar esta dinâmica, temos a equipa francesa no Mundial como a mais numerosa: 26 atletas. Não temos Babarit, mas os frutos do seu excelente trabalho vão certamente dar que falar ;) Recordemos agora algumas fotos de Pete Copp, NEWS TEAM kayaksurf.net, com Matt Babarit nas ondas em Portugal no ano passado.

If there is somenone that we ALL are going to miss in this World Waveski Surfing Titles... is Mathieu Babarit.

The multi-world champion can't come to the Ocean Spirit. We lost the opportunity to, once again, watch the French master in action. And why did we all miss you? Because Matt is much more than just an athlete. He is the major promoter of the sport, unfolds through interviews and promotional films - the first interview he gave to kayaksurf.net was in 2004! - and assumes an attitude of humility and passion for the sport which has no parallel.

The Octopus School has put in the waves dozens and dozens of the current top waveski french riders. It continues to promote the sport like no one does in the world. Olonne Sur Mer (Vendée) and Plouhinec are the two European waveski meccas (and perhaps worldwide). That's where new French generation comes and to support this dynamic, we have the French team in World Cup as the most numerous: 26 athletes. We will not have Babarit, but the fruits of his excellent work will certainly be talked about;) Recall these photos taken by Pete Copp last year in Portugal with Matt Babarit in the waves.

Oitavo report de Steve Farthing! Já estamos em directo de Santa Cruz e, finalmente, já reunimos com Jackie Dillon, presidente da Ass. Mundial de Waveski. O dia de hoje esteve algo cinzento mas deu para treinar. Em baixo, algumas fotos ;)
