Campeonato Francês de Waveski / 29 de Outubro a 1 de Novembro
As estrelas estão lá todas! Campeões do mundo e nova geração na meca do waveski europeu (e talvez mundial). Ficamos à espera do report!
As every year, our France National Waveski Championship takes place at the end of october. This 2011 edition takes place in Sables d’Olonne, which is a special place for waveski, as it’s the only place in France (and probably in the world… !) that has a school with waveski section that prepares young riders to waveski high level and teaches them at school at the same time, as in any school. Great champions as Caroline Angibaud, Paul Jouet, Coralie Jousset, Renan Leloutre,… studied in this school. Now, Fred Jonneaux, NEWS TEAM kayaksurf.net, invites us for one more edition of the TOP event in Sables d'Olonnes. Below more infos. Let's wait for the reports and good luck for all! Don't forget the Best Wave Trophy kayaksurf.net ;)

FRANCE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
Sables d’Olonne – Oct 29th to Nov 1st
As every year, our France National Waveski Championship takes place at the end of october. This 2011 edition takes place in Sables d’Olonne, which is a special place for waveski, as it’s the only place in France (and probably in the world… !) that has a school with waveski section that prepares young riders to waveski high level and teaches them at school at the same time, as in any school. Great champions as Caroline Angibaud, Paul Jouet, Coralie Jousset, Renan Leloutre,… studied in this school.
Those special students are coached by Gérard Lucas, who was National Waveski Team Coach for several years. Gérard is also the Contest Director for these 2011 Waveski France National Championships.
Of course it’s our main event in France, and each year more than 80 riders meet there to compete : as you could see in Santa Cruz, the powerful surf of our young riders will be present, and you can be sure they all are going to struggle to make a big show on the waves… ! Just try to imagine Pablo Arrouays and Virgile Humbert fighting for the national title… do you think Mathieu Babarit and Caroline Angibaud (who both couldn’t run the world titles) will let them do the job ?... Renan Leloutre, Maël Divialle, Mathieu Jonneaux, Maxime Gaborit, Nathan Le Bars…. And many other great surfers will be there, and you can be sure they all want to climb on podiums !...
Sequência de Mathieu Jonneaux / Mundial de Waveski 2011
photos by scosf2011
Mathieu Jonneaux, Watertech Team, is already a very well known name here on kayaksurf.net ;) Besides being one of the strongest names of the new french waveski generation, Matt is also the manager of Mamgoz Productions. We all know very well their video productions in the last Worlds. Enjoy this sequence taken in Santa Cruz Ocean Spirit Festival (Waveski Worlds 2011). Very cool!
- "sharing our common passion : paddling and surfing waves ! "
One more! It's the usual french activitie regarding the waveski scene. Fred Jonneaux, NEWS TEAM kayaksurf.net, sent us the invitiation for next October 23rd. Let's go! This event will also have for the very firts time in France, the participation of some surfkayakers ;) That's great News! Like in Portugal, Ireland, Brazil, USA, Galiza, Italy and now... also in France. Like Fred writes below - "sharing our common passion : paddling and surfing waves ! ". Let's wait for the report!!

Brittany Regional Waveski AND Surfkayak Competition on October 23rd
Since a few years, in Brittany, we manage to run a regional waveski circuit, that has 3 or 4 legs, and a regional championship. This is the way we found to interest young and beginners in waveski to come to competitions that are not too far away from the place they live, and it’s also the way to make a regional ranking. Then, riders who get good ranking are supposed to come to the waveski national circuit. We generally have between 20 and 35 entries on each regional leg.
To encourage new riders and also ladies to come to the activity, we give free entries to ladies, and also to people who are not yet ranked in waveski. Some of them don’t have any board, so we also lend them free of charge the boards that our Departemental Kayak Comitee lends us for waveski development, which is really a very good help. By this way, last year we got a few new riders coming to the activity. After a few competitions on the regional circuit, some of them buy a second hand board and then keep on surfing.
Competition organizations are very light : everyone has to give a hand on the organization : riders who compete also come to judgement (new ones are teached about it) each club comes with some material (beach flags, judgement files, beach marshall boards,…) and this is really good for the spirit we like to feel on the competitions : hard battle on waves, and friendship on the beach !
And also, for the first time in France, a few surfkayakers will join us on the competition. This is a real good new, because it makes a bigger event, and it’s a very good way to meet new people sharing our common passion : paddling and surfing waves ! Of course we said they are welcome ! Some of our young riders will have the opportunity to try a surfkayak, some of surfkayakers will have their first rides on a waveski, this is a good experience for everyone.
Other European countries, as Portugal, Spain, Ireland,… do so, so we can enjoy that France, which has very few surfkayakers, go on the same way, it can be a real promotion for both activities.
So we just pray for good conditions for October 23rd at Baie des Trépassés (Plouhinec Club organization), the most western spot of France.
This regional meeting is the last one before our National Waveski Championship which takes place in Sables d’Olonne (in the middle of french atlantic coast) from October 29th to November 1st. So Oct 23rd will probably be a « training competition » before the main national event… this means big level for sure !
World Waveski Surfing Titles 2011 & Mathieu Babarit
If there is somenone that we ALL are going to miss in this World Waveski Surfing Titles... is Mathieu Babarit.
The multi-world champion can't come to the Ocean Spirit. We lost the opportunity to, once again, watch the French master in action. And why did we all miss you? Because Matt is much more than just an athlete. He is the major promoter of the sport, unfolds through interviews and promotional films - the first interview he gave to kayaksurf.net was in 2004! - and assumes an attitude of humility and passion for the sport which has no parallel.
The Octopus School has put in the waves dozens and dozens of the current top waveski french riders. It continues to promote the sport like no one does in the world. Olonne Sur Mer (Vendée) and Plouhinec are the two European waveski meccas (and perhaps worldwide). That's where new French generation comes and to support this dynamic, we have the French team in World Cup as the most numerous: 26 athletes. We will not have Babarit, but the fruits of his excellent work will certainly be talked about;) Recall these photos taken by Pete Copp last year in Portugal with Matt Babarit in the waves.

Championnat Finistère Waveski 2011 Fred Jonneaux report
We organised on the same beach break, 2 different surf zones ; one zone on the part of the beach with smaller waves for the kids (8 to 12 years old) : by groups of 6 riders, race started from the sand, they had to pull their boards to the water, then paddle to a buoy, turn around it and then surf back to the until the arrival line on the beach (same line for start and finish). Time was chronometred, and a bonus of 1, 2 or 3 points could be given : 3 points for riders who surfed ont the same wave from the buoy until the sand ; 2 points for riders who could get a wave to surf and didn't fall down, and 1 point for riders who made a take off and fall before they reached the sand.
1 or two adult are necessary for standing in the water to assist riders who may fall and be frightened by waves (Mathieu did the job, as you can see on the video). Leash and helmet are compulsory.
On the second zone, waves were a bit bigger, and beginners could fight against confirmed riders. Heats of 4 riders, 15 mn per heat. Judgement was special : riders who only surf foam can't get more than 5 points. Riders who go far to get waves from the set gets between 5 to 10 points (depends on what manoeuvers they realise). So, after a few minutes, beginners always try to reach a set of waves, to score better. ;-) On that zone, riders from 13 to 30 competed, by age categories + Ladies.
This was the 4th edition of this event. It's really easy to organize it : no more than 12 boards are necessary. What is important is : leash and helmet are compulsory. Riders understand very easily the rules, and the way to pass several rounds.
What is good is that we could see that since last year, most of the riders had some training sessions in their clubs before the came to this competition. And that is a very interesting thing, because it is the first time we can see that : on previous editions, riders (except Plouhinec riders !... ;)) were discovering waveski during the competition.
That means that now, all those kayakers know what waveski surfing is, they know it is one of the paddling activity, and know what pleasure it can give (just have a look at their face on the video, it's an evidence). So we can hope that, even for kayakers who live away from the sea, that they will surf again on waveski as soon as they have an opportunity to do it !
World Waveski Surfing Titles 2011 / PLOUHINEC WAVESKI TEAM
You probably remember the interview we published in kayaksurf.net about Hugues Termeau, waveski instructor in Plouhinec (extreme NW of France). He’s well known in France as a passionated kayaker, and also as a great rider. He communicates his passion so well, that several young riders from his club compete now on the french waveski national circuit and often reach podiums in different categories. Now, take a look to Fred Jonneaux report, NEWS TEAM kayaksurf.net, that presents us all the Plouhinec Team that will come till Portugal this year ;)

PLOUHINEC WAVESKI TEAM COMING TO OCEAN SPIRIT
Plouhinec is a very good place for surf in France. In August 2010, Fred and Mathieu Jonneaux (also from the club of Plouhinec) came to Ocean Spirit festival in Santa Cruz, to have a look at the event, preparing their coming for World waveski titles 2011.
Then, back to Plouhinec, Fred sent to kayaksurf.net an e-mail, something like : « Luis Pedro, Ocean Spirit festival is just an amazing event, and I can promise you that we are going to do our best to come with a team of young riders in 2011 ».
Right now, they are 8 riders from Plouhinec coming to run the World Waveski Titles, including 2 ladies. For all of them, it’s their first participation on the World titles. They train a lot for this event. Let me appear them :

BRITTANY CHAMPIONSHIP WAVESKI 2011 by Fred jonneaux It took place in marvellous spot of Baie des Trépassés, which is the most west spot of France. 24 riders coming from several waveski and kayak clubs in Brittany. Competition begins with the Open. Very small waves, low tide… difficult conditions, only the fighters manage to be qualified. In young category (14-15 years old), Nathan Le Bars (Plouhinec club) wins the final against Timothé Fountaine (Ria d’Etel club) at the 2nd place.
At midday, waves are growing and growing. Juniors make the show on good conditions. Mathieu Jonneaux wins the competition. In the same family, Emilie Jonneaux pushes her best surf during the Ladies final heat and wins the competition ! That means two regional champions in the same family !!!
Then Seniors fight in good and powerful conditions. Max Le Tallec (Ria d’Etel club), who was disqualified in the first Open heat, makes a real show and wins the Senior final. Veterans show their best surf, and Hugues Termeau and Pierre-Yves Moan (both waveski instructors) manage to reach the Open final,… against Nathan Le Bars (Cadet) and Benjamin Baniel (Senior).
