Hi everyone,

Ray Cotton, Drew Hayes and I (Joey and Nathan were not invited) took a short surf trip to Costa Rica last month and I did a little journal with photos on my website. There is also some video footage that I haven't gotten around to editing.

Also, Joey and I still have loads and loads of footage from the Portugal worlds that we also haven't had a chance to edit. I promised Pete B and Gary Adcock that I'd put Gary's huge aerial from worlds up online sometime, and I will. I got a really nice shot of that, plus lots of others. Apparently all Gary's friends back home don't believe he did that. Getting around to it sooner or later and will post a note here when it's available to view.

A praia de Zarautz - 20 km para Oeste de S.Sebastian, País Basco - recebeu mais uma prova de kayaksurf. Nomes bem conhecidos da cena internacional da nossa modalidade estiveram presentes. Dois campeões mundiais participaram! E ganharam nas respectivas categorias: Ainhoa Tolosa e Urko Otxoa. Edu Etxeberria ganhou nos IC. Mais em baixo, dois vídeos com imagens do evento.

É um projecto de Joey Hall - NEWS TEAM kayaksurf.net - de há longo tempo. Contém quase duas horas de grande kayaksurf com imagens de Inglaterra, País Basco, Portugal, Marrocos e EUA. Tudo com alguns dos melhores kayaksurfistas da actualidade. Joey esteve connosco no Mundial no Ocean Spirit e confidenciou-nos que estava quase a acabar a montagem do dvd. Agora, quase no final, perda quase total dos discos... apesar dos backups, Joey teve que refazer grande parte. Mesmo assim, em breve estará disponível. Muito provavelmente, no início de Janeiro. INTERFERENCE... THE ODYSSEI!

I started Interference coming off what was probably the worst year of my life. My fiance had dumped me, my employment situation was miserable, I had major unexpected health issues, the list goes on. Anyway, we started in the fall of 2007. The past three years since have been crazy, exciting, stressful, interesting..... I've "gone dark" over the past few months, putting my head down to get this thing done.

Now, finally, after delays and problems and countless issues, Interference is sitting on my computer, completed. That's the good news. The bad news is...both my hard drives crashed in my editing desktop while I was burning what was to be the final (or at least next to final) DVD to be used as the master. I've spent the past three days in a funk, so close to the finish line I could practically taste the freshly pressed DVDs...and yet so far away.

Back to some good news though, I made backups of nearly all my files. The video is safe, the master files were on a separate hard drive anyway, and what I've lost is pretty negligible in the long run. All it means is I'm going to spend a few extra days restoring everything. Not a big deal in the scheme of things, but I was hoping to surprise everyone by having it available before Christmas. With any luck, and some help from the Postal Service) it will be out by new years day or soon thereafter.

Thanks to everyone who's been patient with me regarding this film. The major delay came from the fact that I had too much good footage....a good problem to have. I decided to add an entire extra destination to the film (Ecuador) that was not going to be in the original cut. The film is better for having added the extra footage. My original desire was to make Interference 45 minutes long. It looks like the final cut is now 1 hour and 55 minutes in length.

Watching the final version of the film gave me goosebumps, not because of the surfing shots alone (I'll let the audience judge for themselves (I think they are awesome (sorry, I said I'd let the audience judge, so carry on))), but more so because of the feeling of adventure, the memories, reliving the amazing things we saw. I had the most fun in my entire life on the trips depicted in the film. And I got to go on those trips with some of the most amazing surf kayakers, and best friends one could hope to have in their life. My hope is that people watching the video will feel a bit of that adventure, to get a little taste of what it's like to travel to far away places with your best surfing buddies.

I'm excited to release it into the wild, after all these years. I'm excited for people to see it. Will it be well received? I have no idea, I hope so. But regardless of that, I've made the film I wanted to make. The film that actually started back in 2002, when I truly fell in love with surf kayaking and thought to myself "I'd love to make a surf kayaking movie that shows how much fun surf kayaking is." I shrugged that thought off for so many years thinking "nah, I could never do that." Well, for better or worse (and if you look at how much debt I'm in you might think the latter), I've made Interference.

Not sure why I wrote this tonight, other than I'm bored as hell waiting for about a gazillion Gigabytes of data to finish restoring, I'll probably write some more after the DVD is out.

Thanks to Yellowboy, Marc, Ninks, Spencer, Rob, Stuey, Pete, Ailsa, Luis from Kayaksurf.net, and everyone else who have been involved with the project, there's no way I could of made this thing without the help of so many people.

I'll announce when the master has gone off to press. And as soon as this thing goes out the door, I've got a second film, in the can, completely shot, waiting for me to edit it, hopefully this next one won't take nearly as long ;)

Countless days of not even bothering to look at the surf report because I knew the only surfing I'd be doing would be on the computer

Gabriel Landini - NEWS TEAM - está a produzir um novo waveski para a Bad Machine em colaboração com o shaper Angel Antifora ( LITO ). No projecto, colaboram também Ruben Farriols e Fernando Ferrari. O modelo ainda está em testes mas Gabriel já nos enviou as primeiras imagens.

Gabriel Landini - NEWS TEAM kayaksurf.net - is developping a new waveski for Bad Machine. The shaper is Angel Anfifora (LITO). In the same project, two other friends: Ruben Farriols and Fernando Ferrari. The new wave is still in tests but Gabriel already sent us the first photos. All the best for the project!!

O site está em reconstrução mas Fred Jonneaux já nos enviou o cartaz para o próximo grande evento do waveski francês. O "Penn Kalet Trophy", decorre em Plouhinec, Bretanha Francesa e, para 2010, está já agendada a ARMOR EUROPA CUP WAVESKI. Esta prova estará integrada no festival de Pen Kallet e Plouhinec é, para muitos, a meca do waveski europeu. São dezenas de raiders em várias categorias e Mathieu Babarit a apadrinhar grande parte da nova geração de participantes no evento. Fica a sugestão de mais uma prova com o apoio do kayaksurf.net!

ASSOCIAÇÃO DE KAYAKSURF DA COSTA ESTE / NEWS PARA 2010 e MUNDIAL 2011

É lá que se vai realizar o próximo mundial de kayaksurf e a ESKA (Associação de Kayaksurf da Costa Este), já divulgou o calendário do próximo ano. Todas as provas servirão de "estágio" para o Mundial de 2011. Joey Hall enviou-nos o calendário e convida-nos a comparecer numa das provas de 2010 em jeito de antevisão do Mundial.

Plans for the ESKA 2010 Circuit

National Surf Kayak Championships, Battle for Hatteras, etc.

Here are some details on the plan for the official 2010 Eastern Surf Kayak Association event circuit. There is already a lot of excitement and interest in events for next year, leading up to the 2011 World Surf Kayak Championships, to be held in OBX, NC in the fall of 2011.

These events will be used as part of the selection process for the 2011 US East Surf Kayak Team, and we will be offering beginner, intermediate, and advanced categories at all events when possible.

Our tentative plan for 2010 is as follows, dates TBD:

February 2010:
Jacksonville, Florida Event at Hannah Park

March 2010:
Charleston, South Carolina Event at Folly Beach

May 2010:
Topsail Island, North Carolina Event

September 2010:
The 2010 US National Surf Kayak Championships and Battle for Hatteras:
Once again the US National Surf Kayak Championships return to the east coast. With the World Championships occurring on the Outer Banks of North Carolina in fall of 2011, we plan on holding the 2010 Nationals in the same location, in order to test some systems, and do a bit of a “dress rehearsal” for the Worlds.

In addition, we will be running the much postponed Battle for Hatteras team event in conjunction with the 2010 US National Surf Kayak Championships. The Battle for Hatteras will feature teams of three (one HP kayak, one IC kayak, and one waveski) facing off against each other.

The 2010 National Surf Kayak Championships and Battle for Hatteras will occur over a four day period, likely in early September. Though this is a “US” event, we would like to extend the invitation to surf kayakers all over the world to come participate in the Nationals and the Battle for Hatteras.

October 2010:
Topsail Island, North Carolina Event

November 2010:
New Smyrna, Florida Event

There may be more events added to this list in the near future. Dates will be set in the coming months, and we will also have some other exciting news to announce soon.

We are also planning on holding 6-8 events during the 2011 lead up to the World Surf Kayak Championships.

There are some weeks that we wish to be in another place far far away... last one was one of these. We just received incredible reports from three fantastics surfing paradises: Tonga, Galápagos and Costa Rica. Nathan Eades, Roberta Borsari and Bruno Guazelli. Awesome photos... of course. JALAMA EXPRESSION SESSION 2009

Jalama kicked off Thursday afternoon with Tao Berman and me as we began our practice sessions for kayak tow-ins with the Red Bull PWC (personal water craft).

Friday the early surf crew started to filter into Jalama with a great session to be had at “T’s” (aka Tarantulas) in the morning. The report was that solid 8’ faces were rule of the day on the right-handers with the board surfers giving our butt surfers lots of room to do their thing. Sat. surf had decreased to shoulder high with good conditions in the morning denigrating in the afternoon to 8’ wind blown storm surf – perfect for more tow–in practice. Look for the still photos (by Jim Grossman) of Tao and Vince getting air on some crazy tow-outs. Around 35 people attended the Class V Surf Dogs BBQ Sat. night with the now famous Broken Paddle Margaritas flowing as freely as the surf related B.S.

The evening was topped off by Taylor’s videos of the day’s surf highlights being shown to the hearty crew around the campfire. Sunday morning dawned with near perfect conditions and 4 – 6’ A framed peaks and a nice offshore wind to groom them to perfection. It was an appropriate way to bring to close the 13th annual Jalama Expression Session. Thanks to all who attended. Randy & Mickey.

JALAMA EXPRESSION SESSION 2009

The event was awesome as per usual thanks to Randy Phillips, Mickey Stowell and the rest of the Class V Surfdogs. I showed up early Saturday and I was ready to surf the Reaction. I was greeted some really fun 2-4 foot waves right at the camp area. Some had gone down to Tarantulas, but, I figured 'Why paddle all the way down there" for I had all these fun looking waves to myself! A super fun time and others finally got out that and got some.

Later that Saturday good ol' Tao Berman showed us how it was done doing some tow in practice. Not an easy day for that! Choppy and just plain difficult to even hold on, much less get some big air. Fun nonetheless, though, and I am very sure we gave the 'Peanut Gallery' something to watch.

These photos are from the session that Taylor Burch, Matt Radis, Ian (From HB), Tao Berman, Jim Grossman, and Randy Phillips had on Sunday morning. Really NICE waves and it was really Jim who got a really nice aerial!

KAYAKSURF & WAVESKI WORKSHOP IN PENICHE / PORTUGAL

REPORT FINAL DA FORMAÇÃO SOBRE KAYAKSURF E WAVESKI EM PENICHE

O convite surgiu por parte do Instituto Politécnico de Santarém. O seu pólo de desporto - Escola Superior de Desporto de Rio Maior - está a administrar um Mestrado em "Desportos de Natureza: Actividades Aquáticas" e, na agenda da formação, kayaksurf e waveski. Paulo Simões, monitor e formador da RPF Kayaksurf School / Escola de Surf da Figueira da Foz, está a gerir a formação. A Escola de Surf de Peniche associou-se à iniciativa e a RPF contribuiu com todo o material. Reunidos os esforços, Paulo Simões está uma vez mais associado a uma iniciativa que promove o nosso desporto. Depois da pioneira Kayaksurf School na Figueira da Foz, reforça a aposta na formação na Federação Portuguesa de Canoagem e junto à comunidade académica. No passado fim de semana, decorreu a parte final da formação. Fotos de Henrique Frazão.

It ran in one of the most well known Europe surf spots - Peniche. Paulo Simões, RPF kayaksurf and waveski trainer, managed a workshop about our sport during two weekends. The target were be students of a "Sports and Outdoor activities". After the pioneer Kayaksurf School, Paulo Simões is associated with one more initiative that supports kayaksurf and waveski. kayaksurf.net proudly supports this event.
