Brittany Waveski Championship 2010
Report by Fred Jonneaux

Sunday 4th of July, the kayak club of Plouhinec was organizing the Brittany Waveski Championship 2010, on the spot of Baie des Trépassés, the most western spot of France.

25 riders were registred for this regional competition, which is the 5th regional competition we have in the year : 2 regional cups in autumn, 2 other ones in spring, and we finish the sport year with the Brittany Championship.

Two riders (Maxime and Elise Gaborit) from Vendée region were friendly invited to the competition. Vendée is next to Brittany, they don’t have any regional waveski championship there. So they could compete but they cannot be in the official Britton results.

Arriving early in the morning, 6 to 8 feet of powerful waves... Some of the competitors had to fight in the water to manage to get over the waves. The first heats began with the Young category, then the the first leg of the Open. After that came the Ladies final, with 3 riders who made a real fight on really big waves. Then, the tide getting lower, waves got a bit smaller, and a light on-shore wind made them less powerful. On the Open semi-final, all adults, except one, were pushed out by the young riders ! This shows how the level of young waveskiers is growing and growing ! On the Open final, we found Maxime Gaborit (Europe Champion 2010 in Young category), Nathan Le Bars (3rd at Europeans 2010, Young), Mathieu Jonneaux (Watertech Team, 7th Open at the Europeans 2010), and Ludovic Mordant. Maxime and Nathan were (of course) also in the Young Final.

Kévin Le Bars, Mathieu Jonneaux, Elise Gaborit (the only girl in Junior) and Eliaz Le Quilliec battled on the Junior Final. Mathieu really wanted a double victory (in Open and Junior), he put all his best in the competition and managed to get the double title : he is the Briton Open and Junior Champion 2010 !

Congratulations to all the competitors, especially to the Ladies, conditions in the morning were just frightening, they fighted as warriors !
