2011 Student Surf Kayak Championships
by Steve Bowens
On Wednesday the 26th of April, gwithian beach saw the third annual student surf kayak competition. It was welcomed by a nice waist to chest high wave and glorious sunny weather. The conditions were perfect for the wide range of abilities that came along. There were some exceptional performances by Phil Watson, Emma Wynter, Jack Barker, Dylan etch etc..... there was also a fantastic turn out (about 40%) who were not surf kayakers at all but wanted to come and just have fun learning what it was all about and throwing caution to the wind. This year saw the biggest range of educational institutions represented to date with competitors from; Falmouth Marine School, Cornwall College, Truro College, University of Exeter, University of Plymouth, University of Swansea, some schools and a few individual students.
The juniors contest was won by Jack Barker who also attained a well deserved third place in the open and Philip Watson turned out the victor in a tightly contested open final. The team event was won by Truro College with Falmouth Marine School running up in second place.
Unfortunately this year we only had Emma competing in the ladies discipline but with just as much skill and ability as any of the guys, they were all watching out when she was in there heat.
The event was added to greatly by the presence of AS Watersports who kindly provided some fantastic prizes and also had demo equipment available for anyone after watching the contest fancied giving it a go. Other prizes were donated by Wildthings canoes.
Richard Uren from Truro College said “last year was hard to beat but Tim (Falmouth Marine School) did a fantastic job and this event was the best yet (again!)” Steve Bowes (Tutor from Falmouth Marine School) said: “Tim did a great job; these events always make me very proud of our students as they are put under the spotlight. I was really please with all the guys who came along with no real surf kayak background and gave it their all, they were fantastic and did not seem to be put off by the guys who compete on the world circuit at all. Philip, Emma, Dylan etc were great at encouraging the newcomers and helping them get on and off the water. A fantastic day all round”
