One more report directly from Santa Cruz. Steve Farthing describes us the site and comment the new riders generation that comes from the surfkayaking scene. Very good!

Report 5
Construction of the comp site is coming along and I caught up with Bruno Melo who is under a bit of pressure to get everything finished by Wednesday. The surf has been reasonably consistent although a little small today but we can expect to great waves throughout the event. Sandra Pienaar, the first of the South African team has arrived, along with Aussie Blaire Moore, and Pablo and Pierre from France.
I thought I would mention a few other contenders that I’ve crossed paths with over the years. Mike Orsmond, former South African and now residing in the UK, a former world champion. Watch out if the surf is big, as he performed well at the AWWP event in 2009 in monstrous conditions. The two yankees, Fletcher Burton and Tyler Lausten, both full of surprises and riding the new brand TL waveski’s. We are also seeing a new breed of kayakers taking up the sport, Edu Etxeberria from the Basque country, James Hawker from the UK, Jim Grossman from the US, Bruno Melo from Portugal and Stefano Bellotti from Italy, all high ranking competitors and it will be very interesting to see how they transition across the 2 sports.
If you’re looking for something to do next Saturday, there are some great markets in Santa Cruz from 4pm. I also got to sample a beautiful cataplana at the Praia do Navio café, another Portuguese delicacy that you can’t miss out on.
Until next time, Ocean Spirit on my Mind!
