Widemouth, Black Rock - 18/19 April 2009 by John Watson

Saturday:
A full event of 50 people - one class open to men, ladies, juniors, masters, first-timers and seasoned pros. Everyone surfs in 3 rounds through the day. Small surf was perfect for this event - it means newcomers are surfing closely alongside some of the best in the world. People learn quickly and the mix of the heat draws adds to the excitement. At the end of the day, the top 8 go through to the semi-finals and then the final.

Sunday:
All the other classes. It was great to have a day devoted to long boats, Ladies, Junior and Master long and short boats. Many people surfed 5 or 6 heats during the day, and the beach was hot and sunny. A late night Saturday was not the best preparation!

Surf picked up a little from the Saturday and there was a good wave coming in through the middle of the day.
