WATERTECH IRISH LEAGUE 09 / SLIGO / APRIL 24 & 25 / SURF REPORT

The weekend of 25/26 of April saw the second competition of the 2009 Watertech Irish league and the second world championship team selection event take place in Sligo. Saturday had some very windy onshore waves and it was decided to put the event off until the Sunday and go climb a mountain!! The wind was to swing around and drop of in strength for sunday. It was decided to run in Strandhill which is always reliable.

SURF REPORT by KARL DOLAN / KAYAKSURF IRELAND TEAM

We were rewarded for our patience with some lovely clean surf that lasted the day and really picked up and surprised us for the semi finals and finals at the end of the day. 3-4ft clean sets rolling in and all been ripped up with some great surfing. Every heat was tight with a lot of them coming to count backs on highest wave score and even second highest wave scores!

Probably the highlights of the event was the junior Eoin Keyes making it to the final of the mens short boat Eoin has beeen paddling a couple of years and only recently started surf kayaking. He got the hang of the speedy quickly and is definetly one to be one to watch for the worlds!!

Len Kellihers sick air in the Short boat final caught the attention of the judges which earned him top spot in the short boat final on highest wave score.- its official the watertech boats can fly!
Thanks again to Watertech kayaks and Bundoran Surf Co for their support and prizes.
