Armor Europa Cup Waveski 2010
Fabien DUCEPT / New European champion !
by Fred Jonneaux

After a few grey weather days, the riders arrived with a warm sun, coming from Scotland, Irelande, Spain, Portugal with the Watertech team, and from Jersey and all parts of France, even Reunion Island and Guadeloupe islande. Sun was shining, and Gwendrez spot was just marvellous : green clean water on white sand, and even a dolphin coming to surf with the riders ! The level was very high, with competitors as Caroline Angibaud, Mathieu Babarit, Coralie Jousset, who knew the young riders would try to get good results on the podiums...

Also a few outsiders as Fabien Ducept, who had not compete since a few years. In young category, Nathan Le Bars (from the organizing club) and Maxime Gaborit (Sables d’Olonne) gave a real fight on the waves to reach the better places. Organizers put 2 zones, to make sure the competition could end before the waves were too small. Judges had full time job on the first day, thanks to them ! On Saturday evening, most of the competition was over. Restaurant with mussles and fries was open on the spot, good atmosphere and some good time for the riders !

Looking at the results at the end of that first day, a few surprises to notice : two young riders had managed to reach the Open semi-finals : Maxime Gaborit, and Mathieu Jonneaux from the Watertech team, showing his new Watertech waveski is a real gun !

On Sunday morning were the open final (Mathieu Babarit, Fabien Ducept, Paul Jouet and Clement Guilbert) ; then the Ondine final (Caroline angibaud, Coralie Jousset, Océane Legendre and Elise Gaborit) ; the young final (Nathan Le Bars, Nicolas Fountaine, Baptiste Escola and Maxime Gaborit).

Meanwhile, other riders could test Watertech waveskis. The long history of Watertech kayaksurf building give a special experience on the quality of their waveskis, as all present riders could discover. Riders appreciate the waveski offered as prize from Rui Calado to a young rider during the Sunday night video projection. This means Watertech is supporting the coming of young guys in waveski, which is very good for the future of that sport.

At the end of this event, which was a sportive and also a friendly meeting, all can see that waveski is growing in Europe, and France is a leader in waveski development, bringing more and more young riders with very good level on the competitions. And it is also very interesting to see that new brands, as Watertech, are getting into waveski activity. And also the coming of kayaksurfers as David Speller, from Jersey, or Rhiannon Woodman (Scotland), who’s on the world top 5 in ladies kayaksurf, seems to show waveski surfing very close to kayaksurf.

The event is just over, but the next big show of waveski is now in all riders heads : World Championship at Santa Cruz (Portugal) during Ocean Spirit 2011 !

Viva Portugal !!!
