No Mundial de Kayaksurf no nosso país, sagrou-se Campeão em Masters HP. Semanas depois rumou a casa para participar no Mundial de Waveski. Steve Farthing está numa posição privilegiada para nos falar sobre os dois eventos. Vejam as respostas!

He won in the Portuguese Kayakurf Worlds the title of Masters HP. Weeks later, went home to participate in the Waveski World Titles. Steve Farthing is the right man to give us a small balance of both events. Check out the answers:

Hi Steve. You were this year in two World Championships - kayaksurf and waveski. What will you remember about this two events?

Both were terrific well run events. Kayaksurf being associated with Ocean Spirit did have the edge though with the massive infrastructure, music festival and crowds as well as exposure to other surf disciplines. Apart from the competitive side of things I really enjoyed meeting new people with a common interest and now I have a bunch of new friends living on the other side of the world. From a waveski perspective we had great surf, I got to catch up with all my old mates and had a ball behind the mic. Didnt have the best of competitions in terms of results but had some great freesurfs and landed some of the biggest aerials of my life.

Differences and similarities between the two experiences...

Waveskis have more than 30 years of competition and design behind them hence there are more guys doing bigger moves and we saw them at Coffs Harbour just check out http://www.subgraviti.com/ and http://www.peniorphotography.com/ . When I look at Surf Kayaks in particular the Random Evolution which was designed around a waveski I can see the gap closing particularly if you can get a few of the top waveskiers on board. They're both really fun sports with great people involved and I really think we have an opportunity to merge both disciplines, I'm hooked on both and cant wait till the next event.

Wouldnt be great if Ocean Spirit took on the next world waveski titles.

À segunda ronda na classe Open (repescagens), o Francisco Saraiva ficou em quarto sendo eliminado no heat 8. Claro que para nós, isso é o que menos interessa! O que é de valorizar é a habitual atitude positiva e de grande iniciativa que tão bem conhecemos no Francisco. Agora, imaginamos as horas livres que ele não tem para surfar naquele paraíso! WORLDS Day 4 - Wednesday 9th September 2009

The surf was pumping this morning with a quarter tide coming in and off shore winds. The Open division was on all day and we now have our top 16 riders. By the time we got to heat 32, it was after midday and the conditions went onshore with an outgoing tide and pretty ordinary surf. There were some tough heats and there was some major upsets with previous world champions and finalists Dave Dinning, Blair Moore, Dale Randahl, Darren Kearns, Ben John and myself.

Rees Duncan is still going through with a shoulder injury that is 50/50 on perservering with continuing in the event.

Last night we all met at Stetsons in Coffs Harbour, one of the events major sponsors to see the premiere of the Subgraviti Productions new movie "B Side" what a great waveski flick.

More age division heats tomorrow and some of the open man on man rounds, the actions well and truely hotting up. Until Tomorrow "Lets go Bananas"

Decorreu este sábado o primeiro dia de competição no Mundial de Waveski que decorre na Austrália de 5 a 12 de Setembro. O evento conta com 106 inscritos divididos por 9 países e 9 categorias. Penny Bedford e Steve Farthing deram-nos todos os créditos para a publicação dos seus reports e então aqui vão as últimas!

Da nossa parte, Francisco Saraiva - único portuga no evento - ficou em terceiro no seu heat. Podem ver mais em baixo as classificações e, entretanto, vamos esperar pela respescagens. Boa sorte Francisco!

WORLDS Day 1 - Saturday 5th September 2009

Wouldn't you know it, first day of competition and the SE winds pick up, making the waves a choppy and unpredictable although still around the 3 foot mark. Round 1 of the open qualifiers and Masters was run, no major upsets and no eliminations as repercharges will be run tomorrow. Justine Guillaume from Guadeloupe was a standout with one of the highest heat scores but again the conditions were challenging.

Looking forward to better conditions tomorrow keep checking the results and photos. Until tomorrow you know the saying "Let go Bananas"

WORLD WAVESKI TITLES / Pre-Worlds report by Steve Farting + Penny Bedford Photos
Tuesday 1st September 2009

Bit of a waveski crowd in the surf this morning. Blair Moore, Ben John, Damien Vickery, Tyler Laustern, Lisa Ryan, myself and the guys from Guadaloupe. Everyone was pulling big moves but I thought the standout was Virgil Humbert, with his repetoir of radical twisting aerials. Conditions improved on yesterday with 3 to 4 foot peaks coming through. Fletcher Burton had the water camera out and I think he captured a few special shot that we will try and get a few up on the site.

Mathieu Babarit , Caroline Angibaud, The Cambells and Andre Burger have arrived. Andre paddled out for a later session, the water is still a bit chilly and he's out there in his boardies.

Am going out for a high tide session at 4, until tomorrow.

PRE-WORLDS COMP PERIGIAN 23rd AUGUST by STEVE FARTHING

MINI COMPETIÇÃO EM PERIGIAN A ANTECEDER O MUNDIAL DE WAVESKI - 5 a 12 SETEMBRO



Steve Farthing, NEWS TEAM kayaksurf.net, enviou-nos o seu primeiro report directamente da Austrália (Queensland, Costa Este). Steve, campeão do Mundo de Kayaksurf Masters HP, irá igualmente competir no Mundial de Waveski que começará a 5 de Setembro. Francisco Saraiva, o nosso portuga, lá estará a defender as cores nacionais! Mas vamos ao report de Steve - tudo sobre uma mini-competição decorrida na praia de Peregian para aquecer os waves para o Mundial.

When the swells not on, its always tough to get a decent roll up but eight hard core waveski riders made it down to Perigian for a pre-worlds hit out. We decided to run a man on man format with 15 minute heats best 2 waves for 12 round robin heats then semis and final.



The waves were small 1ft with the odd 2 footer but there were enough waves to go around. When the waves are small it gets much harder to separate the riders but after 3 1/2 hours of surfing myself and Damian Vickery paddled out for the final. Not much in it but I took it in a close one.

Special mention to Russell Hudson for putting it all together, Karen Cambell who's ripping on her new gofast and Rob Dalla Bona for the highest heat score of the day.

São três colaborações preciosas: Steve e Ming Farthing juntamente com Penny Bedford. Steve esteve entre nós no Mundial de Kayaksurf e sagrou-se Campeão Mundial na Classe Master HP e é agora elemento da nossa NEWS TEAM. Ming, sua mulher, é uma excelente fotógrafa que nos deixou centenas de imagens para posteriores publicações. Penny Bedford é a fotógrafa oficial do Mundial de Waveski e elemento da nossa NEWS TEAM. Todos estarão presentes no Mundial de Waveski que decorrerá de 5 a 12 de Setembro em Emerald Beach, Coffs Harbour na Austrália.

They will run from 5 till 12th of September in Emerald Beach, Coffs Harbour, Australia. Steve and Ming Farthing plus Penny Bedford will send us all the stuff about the event. There's a portuguese name in the entries: Francisco Saraiva. Francisco is the main promotor of the waveski in Portugal and his activities (FS Waveski School and competitive events) confirms his commitment with the sport.

Para além das informações que teremos do evento, o especial destaque vai para o único e primeiro português inscrito neste evento: Francisco Saraiva. São dele as grandes iniciativas nacionais para a promoção do waveski: a criação de uma escola de formação - http://www.waveski.pt/ - e a organização de vários eventos competitivos. Depois de várias internacionalizações no currículo (Irlanda, País Basco, França) agora, Austrália. O Francisco já nos tinha confidenciado em Ribeira D'Ilhas a vontade de ir e a confirmação aí está nas inscrições com o número 57 no Mundial australiano:
