Sportive achievements: Several first descents in West Sumatra, Indonesia. Also paddled in South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, Sweden and Norway. But mostly just having a great time in beautiful places with my friends is achieving the goal already.

Gear: Any boat, as long as it’s a Fluid Kayak. Using H20 and Werner paddles, Snap Dragon and Level 6 decks, Kokatat dry top, Astral PFD and Sweet helmets, as well as a few other things from Palm and Goya. No complaints.

Favourite break: Anywhere with long rides. On a given day, Derde Steen, Karmers (Kamer Van 17) or Melkbosstrand’s Tubewave. All these spots are in Cape Town.

MEET WATER FIELD KAYAKS from JAPAN

WATER FIELD KAYAKS / MADE IN JAPAN

Estiveram em Portugal no Mundial de Kayaksurf e, para além da primeira participação de uma equipa oficial do Japão num evento como estes, os kayaksurfistas japoneses equipavam quase todos com uns interessantes Water Field Kayaks (WF). Shota Onishi, elemento da nossa NEWS TEAM, já nos tinha falado sobre eles. A curiosidade por mais uma marca no mercado, levou-nos a esta conversa com Yoshihiro Mizuno, designer e proprietário.

A WF começou pelos kayaks de mar por volta de 1987 e, em 1999, produzia o primeiro surfkayak. Errou de início no modelo (como modestamente assume) e, corrigidos os erros, aí está a geração Apollo. Já são comercializados em Taiwan e na Suécia e, em Portugal, sabemos que também ficou um por cá. Em baixo, a entrevista e a oportunidade de conhecermos mais uma marca, mais uma alternativa!

Time to meet another brand! This time the suggestion comes from Japan. In the last worlds, the Japanese team was almost all equipped with Waterfield Kayaks. Now, a small chat with Yoshihiro Mizuno directly from Japan. Great chance to meet another gear and, above all, seeing that surfkayaking designs are really involving all over the world. Enjoy it!

WF on the Worlds in Portugal 2009

Water Field (WF) exists since...
That’s actually a bit hard to say. In 1987, I designed a special folding kayak whose bottom half was made of FRP, while the deck was a fabric skin. But it didn’t sell. In 1992 I began making sea kayaks that finally became popular, and I’ve been enjoying some degree of success since then. I began making surf kayaks in 1999, but I didn’t go out surfing in them, which was a mistake. The design was completely wrong, I’m sorry to say. Finally I went surfing a bit after I made the Apollo 1 in 2001. Then I made 10 more Apollo 1’s which I gave away free for anyone to try. This way, besides receiving valuable feedback, I also made some surfing friends. So, 2001 was also a start of sorts.

Models in production:
As for surf kayaks, for the Apollo Mark 2, we’ve made a new mold, ‘tightening’ the lines of the deck. We seem to get a lot of orders for this model, and the Apollo QT Saturn, which you might have seen this time around in Portugal.

The best-selling surf kayak from WFK:
Up till now it was the Apollo 7+5, but the Mark 2 and QT Saturn will overtake it very soon.

Any dealers outside of Japan?
WFK Taiwan and Orust Kajak in Sweden.



How do you see the evolution of surf kayaking in Japan?
It’s pretty hard to guess in general. Short-size kayaks are common in Japan and I think that they will become ubiquitous. Two niches seem to be developing here: the casual user and the competition-minded. I think that both of these will become more accessible in the near future, attracting a greater number of enthusiasts.

And about surf kayaks… where are we going in the future?
That’s a difficult question. Personally I am really enjoying my work, and I am pretty excited about what the future of surf kayaking may bring.

Have you even been to Portugal?
Personally no, but Mr. Matsumoto, one of our staff was a participant in this year’s competition.

Does WFK have a team?
Official team, no; there is an unofficial team but I’m afraid they are not that good ;)



How long have you been doing surf kayaking?
Since 2001.

MATTHIEU JONNEAUX / A NOVA GERAÇÃO DO WAVESKI FRANCÊS



É mais uma entrevista da série "NOVA GERAÇÃO". Mathieu tem 16 anos de idade e vive em Esquibien (Bretanha francesa). Começou a remar aos 10 anos de idade e, aos 12, iniciou-se no em waveski. No seu (ainda) curto palmarés, contam já várias vitórias: Britanny Champion em infantis - menos de 15 anos de idade - nos anos 2006, 07 e 08. Ainda nesta categoria, alcançou o segundo lugar no Campeonato Francês em 2007. Ainda ao nível nacional, alcançou o segundo lugar (Infantis) e foi o 19º no ranking francês de kayaksurf.

O Mathieu surfa habitualmente com o seu KS na baía de Trépassés e sonha com várias metas: chegar ao pódio no Campeonato Francês de Waveski na categoria 15-17 anos, depois o pódio Europeu na categoria "New Age" e por fim, figurar no top ten da modalidade em França. Quanto a surfkayaks, diz-nos que já experimentou mas que não troca pelas sensações radicais do seu wave.

Jake King só tem 14 anos de idade e, basta ver o vídeo mais em baixo, para concluirmos que estamos na presença de uma das grandes promessas do kayaksurf europeu. Irmão de Corin (já entrevistado), Jake beneficia da grande escola de kayaksurf que é a Irlanda do Norte. Dessie McGlinchey e Jonny Bingham, entre outros, ajudam a formar estes jovens e os frutos estão a surgir. Jake faz freestyle, waveski ou kayaksurf. É só escolher. Jake King is another great (young) surfkayaker that comes till us from the Northern Ireland school. Corin's young brother, Jake is also an awesome paddler. I think that Surfkayaking is a brilliant sport, I like surfing because you can travel the world, meet new people and have opportunities to surf other surf breaks. I think all kayakers should have a go at Surfkayaking because it is so exciting.

Raúl Estrela é o editor e gestor do canoagemonline.net, o portal da canoagem em Portugal. O site abrange várias vertentes da canoagem em geral e, claro, o kayaksurf também consta nesta lista. A nossa colaboração com o canoagemonline já vem de há longa data (é um site parceiro do kayaksurf.net) e, desta vez, convidámos o Raúl para nos escrever algumas linhas sobre kayaksurf. Ele próprio assume que é um "outsider" da modalidade contudo, em 2006, sagrou-se vencedor da única Taça de Portugal de Kayaksurf (reconhecida pela Federação Portuguesa de Canoagem) e participou na primeira prova nacional em Peniche no ano de 2003.

ENTREVISTA

Olá Raúl, em primeiro que tudo, apresenta-nos o Canoagem Online (CO).

Como todos sabem, o canoagemonline.net é um portal generalista de canoagem. E sendo a canoagem um desporto tão diversificado temos ajudado a divulgar todas as vertentes da canoagem. O nosso portal está online desde 2000. No início do site íamos sendo nós a publicar quase todas as notícias e fazíamos também alguns “vídeo reports” que de certo modo ajudaram muito a meter o bichinho a muitos canoístas. Na altura ainda nem se falava em youtube. Mas desde o início que a nossa ideia era abrir a participação do site a todos os que quisessem colaborar. A ideia era ter um portal para todos com o contributo de todos. E parece que finalmente acabámos por conseguir. O nosso site actualmente tem o contributo de canoístas de todas as especialidades.

Como vês a evolução do kayaksurf em Portugal?

Os 10 anos de existência permitiram-nos acompanhar a evolução da canoagem nas várias especialidades e assistir aos altos e baixos que são naturais na evolução de qualquer desporto. No que toca ao kayaksurf podemos dividir a evolução da modalidade em 3 fases: Boom inicial, turbulência e procura de um rumo e por fim a fase de desenvolvimento pleno.

Boom inicial

Com as primeiras provas em Peniche, criou-se algum entusiasmo e tudo parecia que o kayaksurf ia crescer muito rápidamente e vingar no nosso país.

Turbulência e procura de um rumo

Após os dois primeiros anos as coisas não avançaram tão rapidamente como se pensava. Havia alguma divisão de opiniões, problemas com a arbitragem e a meu ver houve uma estagnação. Mas a criação do circuito de provas de kayaksurf, bem ou mal organizada, foi um ponto importante para que a modalidade avançasse. Neste período a questão dos tipos de barco e o tipo de surf também deu pano para mangas.

Neste período houve uma tentativa de aproximação com a Federação Portuguesa de Canoagem, que não trouxe grandes desenvolvimentos. Talvez tenha sido cedo de mais... Ou não conseguimos arranjar as pessoas certas para fazer o elo de ligação entre o kayaksurf e a Federação

Desenvolvimento pleno

Penso que actualmente estamos numa fase de desenvolvimento pleno. Acho que a criação da comissão de kayaksurf, e o surgimento e crescimento de alguns fabricantes nacionais veio trazer pessoas com grande qualidade organizativa e com uma boa noção do que é necessário fazer para que o kayak surf se torne um desporto popular e praticado por cada vez mais canoistas.

Em resumo

Penso que o kayaksurf já deu as voltas que tinha de dar para crescer como modalidade e agora está no bom caminho. Há que insistir na formação tanto de arbitros como de atletas, mas o mais importante é criar condições para que apareçam mais escolas de kayaksurf. Se isso for feito a competição evoluirá naturalmente e com as nossas condições naturais poderemos muito bem ser um país com grande expressão neste desporto.



Falaste há pouco na FPC... como vês de futuro esta relação institucional?

Quanto a uma aproximação à federação de canoagem, não acho que isso seja o aspecto mais importante para que a modalidade desenvolva, e se tal vier a acontecer tem de ser de forma natural e espontânea. Sei bem que a FPC já mostrou abertura para isso, dentro das suas limitações.

O CanoagemOnline (CO) está sempre disponível para ajudar a divulgação de todas as vertentes, mas quando as coisa são feitas de forma organizada, sensata e sem protagonismos temos ainda mais prazer em colaborar.
